Pottery: Wheel 3: Scaling Up, Lids & Handles

(previously named Intermediate Wheel)

This Level 2 Ceramics class series will help you reach new heights with throwing pottery on the wheel. Potters will learn how to throw larger, taller pots, and how to shape more intentional designs designs on the wheel. Advanced slip decoration will be covered, as well as altering forms. Porcelain, white clay, and stoneware will be introduced. Pottery will be microwave and dishwasher safe.

Clay is never boring; there is always more to explore, more to try out and more to create. This is a highly repeatable class.

PREREQUISITE: Beginning Pottery, Beginning Wheel Throwing, and/or Intro to Ceramics from any school at least once.

Come dressed comfortably, with clothes that can get messy.

Tools and materials will be provided – materials included in price.

Beginning Ceramics MONDAY EVENING begins 3.2

Beginning Ceramics

Course Length: 8 classes
Date: Mondays, beginning March 2
Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm

This beginner friendly series of classes will introduce you to the most accessible way to work in clay, then guide you through a range of building techniques available to ceramicists. You can advance with the clay, increasing your repertoire of forms using slab, coil, and pinch methods to create pottery and sculpture as well as learning to throw on the wheel.

Participants will be taught basic wheel–throwing skills and techniques such as centering, pulling cylinders, shaping, trimming, pulling handles, decorating and glazing. Participants will practice making cups, handled mugs, bowls, plates, and vases on the pottery wheel. Decoration will include a variety of colorful slips and glazes. Pottery will be microwave and dishwasher safe.

  We will explore a variety of amazing decorating and surface techniques to add interest and character to your work to create beautiful handmade pottery that is both dishwasher and microwave safe.

Pottery: Teapot Set (Wheel-throwing)

Welcome to the classic pottery challenge: Tea Sets! In this brief class, participants will achieve a whole new level of skill, all on one project. This class is for students who have taken beginning pottery at least once and want to elevate their pottery game.

This class will elevate your wheel-throwing, handle pulling, clay shaping, and ceramic design abilities. Learn the fundamental skills of crafting a teapot, including learning the art of handle design that balances form and function.

Learn pulling and attaching a handle that not only adds aesthetic value but also provides comfortable lifting and practical use to the pot. Participants will also learn to make a well fitted lid, and a complementary spout.

Along with your teapot you’ll make some cups – a matching set! Participants will learn reliable methods to throw repeatable shapes in repeatable sizes. Achieve a level of uniformity that reflects your growing expertise.

This class is for anyone who has taken beginning pottery / wheel-throwing, at any school. Artists with a passion for creating functional and aesthetically pleasing tea sets. Enthusiasts looking to challenge themselves and elevate their pottery game.

Our pottery and glazes are microwave and dishwasher-safe. Please come wearing comfortable clothes that you can get messy in. Materials provided. Includes 25 lb of clay. Additional clay: $18.

Prerequisite: Beginning Pottery or Intro to Ceramics from any school.
